Leonard Bernstein's one-act Trouble in Tahiti depicts the bittersweet longing lurking beneath the surface of a perfect 1950's American marriage. For dessert, have a taste of Bon Appetit!, Lee Hoiby's delicious musicalization of one of Julia Child's beloved television shows starring Tony Award winner Judy Kaye.

      Trouble in Tahiti is a rave! The only drawback is the sound system at the Tsai. It doesn't capture the full range of the singers' voices.

      Wonderful to see a full-blown production of "Trouble..." It's done periodically by amateur and college groups, usually with a piano and minimal sets, so it's really a treat to have it fully realized.... Expand

      Wonderful to see a full-blown production of "Trouble..." It's done periodically by amateur and college groups, usually with a piano and minimal sets, so it's really a treat to have it fully realized. The lyrics are sometimes a little clumsy (he needed Sondheim!) but the music is charming, and one can hear presages of Candide and West Side Story all through. The cast was wonderful, the choreography was a riot. Bernstein would have been very pleased. Judy Kaye is perfect as Julia Child. The opera is delightful--since Julia was always "singing" anyway, it just felt like a "French Chef" show with orchestral accompaniment. As the Globe said, a great way to bring new audiences to 20th-century opera. Collapse

      Both operettas were fantastic. Trouble in Tahiti was powerful and fun at the same time. The singing was amazing. Then there was a special dessert at intermission (chocolate cupcakes to whet our appetites for the second act). The second operetta was great too, much lighter and very funny. How the singer cooked while singing is an enigma, but she did and masterfully. Highly recommend these shows. Collapse
