Burlesque & Variety Spectacular: Hot, Hilarious and Helping Haiti

A wide range of pioneering variety performers and burlesque dancers along with live musicians will be performing in a concert to benefit the Haitian Coalition of Somerville (HCS). Performers Dan Foley and Alex Feldman came up with the idea when they quickly put together a family variety show in March to raise money for the Haitian Coalition shortly after the earthquake in Haiti. Fully aware that the needs of Haitians would be great for a long time to come, and that donations tend to drop once the news starts slipping from the front pages, they agreed to plan another benefit show--this one bigger and better. Beer and wine will be served, too. Hot, Hilarious and Helping Haiti will feature a most diverse and captivating cast. Among the new burlesque performers are Vanessa White, aka Sugar Dish, and her burgeoning burlesque dance company, Babes in Boinkland--winners of the Boston Phoenix Reader's Poll for Best Dance Performers. (Her December show, "The Slutcracker," is quickly becoming a holiday tradition.) Their stage show is notable for the variety of body types featured: big and small, tall and short, black, and beige, and on and on. The audience simply enjoys feasting their eyes on a wide range of looks and appearances, including people who look like them. These lovely ladies still remove some of their clothing, but unlike the dames of yesteryear they are no man's toys. Creating their own scenarios, appealing to women as well as men, and playing to the house, they offer a very different window to sensuality. Alex Feldman, aka Alex the Jester, speaking his unique language of Grammelot, will use his mind bending visual humor, quirky sight gags, and one of a kind understanding of the human animal, sure to induce laughing in the aisles. He has performed at the Just for Laughs Comedy festival in Montreal, and in 15 other countries. This past November and again in March, he was hired by the US State Department, as a ‘cultural ambassador’ to Russia. Also featured will be Andy O'Flesh, America's foremost presenter of comedy in the buff and founder of The Naked Comedy Revue in both Boston and New York. This brave entertainer--a favorite at The Edinborough Fringe Festival--has absolutely crushed audiences with his outrageous comedy combining mankind's greatest fears, public speaking and being naked in public. At 18, tap dancer Sean Fielder auditioned for the Broadway show, "Bringin Da Noise Bringin Da Funk". At the time, he had already won four Tony awards, but rejoiced when he was offered a role as an understudy. The charismatic hoofer soon got a main role, and worked his way up to the lead. During the show's tour, Sean performed for Hillary Clinton, Jay Leno, Sinbad, CNN World News and on many more TV shows, and now will be an electrifying part of this exclusive Regent Theatre event. And there will be more unusual, amazing acts, —among them Vikesh Kapoor, The Traveling Troubadour; The magic and Illusions of David Garrity, Abby Normal, who does a slow, sensual middle-eastern dance while a sword balances precariously on her head, and the unforgettable Dan Foley, of the Airborne Comedians, who can juggle three lawn chairs at once(among many other highly skillful and unusual stage antics)! Grammy-Nominated electric Harpist (and Burnt Food Museum Creator) Deborah Henson-Conant joins guitarist Eddie G as the Boston Burlesque House Band. "I've never seen such a broad scope of talent coming together for a fundraiser" says Regent Theatre owner Leland Stein. "It's also exciting because I love seeing our theatre return to its roots. After all, it was built for vaudeville and burlesque back in 1916!"
