His songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Nancy Griffith, Joe Ely, KD Lang, Ramblin´ Jack Elliott, and other great artists. Russell is credited, along with Dave Alvin, of inventing the Americana radio format with their Merle Haggard tribute 'Tulare Dust' in 1994. Although most strongly identified with the Texas Country music tradition, his music also incorporates elements of folk, Tex-Mex, and the cowboy music of the American West. "Tom Russell is the best songwriter of the generation following Bob Dylan" (Mike Regenstreif - Montreal Gazette, 2009)
