In a benefit for the New England Folk Music Archives, Country Joe McDonald brings his "Tribute to Woody Guthrie"(a one man show of song and spoken word) to the REGENT THEATRE. Country Joe McDonald has been writing, recording and performing since the 1960's. An icon from the original Woodstock Festival in 1969 where he performed with his band, Country Joe & the Fish, his "I Feel Like I'm Fixin. to Die Rag" become an anthem during the Vietnam War protests. After his stint with Country Joe & the Fish, McDonald signed a solo contract with Vanguard Records and recorded an album of Woody Guthrie songs. The Guthrie album, entitled Thinking of Woody Guthrie won him critical acclaim and a spot the following year in 1975 at the Hollywood Bowl celebration in honor of Guthrie featuring Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie and many who had worked with Woody while he was alive. The album was praised by Marjorie Guthrie (Woody’s wife) as “one of the finest ever made.” In the 1980's, Joe produced an album for Woody's son Joady Guthrie and released it on his own Rag Baby label. He deepened his connection with the Guthrie legacy when invited by the National Steinbeck Center to perform in the Smithsonian Institute's traveling exhibition, "This Land is Your Land: The Life and Legacy of Woody Guthrie" and revisited the Oklahoma connection he shared with Woody through his father who shared Guthrie's Dust Bowl roots. Since 2007, he has been doing his "Tribute to Woody Guthrie" show, a mix of music and spoken word, and has taken it around the country to great acclaim. Says Billy Bragg, Like no one of his generation Country Joe McDonald carries on the mission of Woody Guthrie. Proceeds from this performance benefit The New England Folk Music Archives, a recently established non-profit program with the mission of “bringing the legacy to life” through the preservation and presentation of cultural legacy of folk music and its connections to the New England region. McDonald channels this wry, compassionate man's wisdom without ever getting in the way, a refreshingly egoless performance by someone who remains as amazed by Guthrie as anyone. -San Francisco Chronicle
