In celebration of the successful completion of its fifth season, the Worcester Shakespeare Festival joins hands with the Hanover Theatre and offers a double-barreled production of Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew”. Shrew I features “traditional” casting with the ferociously talented Cassie Brehmer in the title role. Shrew II, however, challenges modern audiences with what might be called even MORE traditional casting. Most people know Shakespeare himself was banned from using female actors. Therefore, Kate, Bianca, Beatrice and even Juliet were originally written to be played by young men. If you’ve never experienced this startling, provocative and edifying opportunity, you’re in for a real treat. Several Shakespeare Companies around the world--like the Globe Company of London and Edward Hall’s Propeller Company--continue to explore traditional all-male castings to rapturous acclaim. WSF is hoping Worcester audiences will find this adventurous choice equally engaging. (And next season, just to get the balance right, WSF hopes to offer an all-female production). While continuing its historical commitment to productions of Shakespeare’s plays outdoors at the Memorial Grove in Green Hill Park, this year WSF wants to reach even further into the heart of downtown Worcester, and the Hanover is an extremely attractive heart. In the process, the company hopes not only to offer its Worcester audience indoor plumbing and safety from inclement weather, but also to create lasting partnerships with other arts organizations similarly dedicated to the cultural well-being of the city. After all, Shakespeare himself originally operated an indoor theatre called the Blackfriars at the same time he performed outdoors in the Globe. Following in Shakespeare’s footsteps seems like a good idea for WSF as well. Join us?
