“The Girlfriends” (“Le amiche”) by Michelangelo Antonioni (Italy, 1955, 104 min.). Eleonora Rossi-Drago returns to her native Turin to open a fashion salon and her new social circle includes the suicidal daughter of an eminent family, a painter who is jealous of his wife’s success, and a woman who vents her despair by attacking her closest friends. With its emphasis of the spiritual and moral decay of the bourgeois, “The Girlfriends” is a stunning example of Antonioni’s distinct style that would be perfected in “L’avventura” “La note” and “L’eclisse” “Diverse plot strands, character psychology, and a masterful control of the camera are perfectly fused…Antonioni’s intensity and grip, and his vivid portrayal of feminine anxiety in particular, make for a film that has barely dated at all” (David Thompson, “Time Out” London).
