Thursday, September 23, 7:30 pm For its next meeting, the Historic Newton Book Club has selected "Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition" by Daniel Okent. In this authoritative history of America’s most puzzling era, Okent describes how the odd bedfellows of the anti-liquor forces, suffragettes, Klu Klux Klansmen, Boston puritans and rural sharecroppers, among others, succeeded in making Prohibiton the law of the land by a lopsided legislative majority representing a demographic minority. The book club is free and open to all.
