Senso by Luchino Visconti (Italy, 1954, 121 min.). As war threatens Austria-occupied Italy in 1866, a nationalist Italian countess (Alida Valli) begins an illicit affair with an Austrian military officer (Farley Granger). The countess must decipher the officer’s intentions as war and love compete in this operatic story of self-destruction, loyalty, and wealth. Visconti moves away from his neorealist background to melodramatic excess, inviting indulgence through luxurious mise-en-scènes. “In all [Visconti’s] films, regardless of period or subject matter, visual splendor is combined with meticulous realism and deep historical and psychological insight” (Geoffrey Nowell-Smith, British Film Institute). Newly restored 35mm print by Studiocanal, Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia/Cineteca Nazionale, Cineteca di Bologna/L’Immagine Ritrovato. Funding provided by Gucci, The Film Foundation, and Comitato Italia 150.
