From Here to Eternity by Fred Zinnemann (1953, 118 min.). Based on James Jones's bestseller, the classic film features an all-star cast including Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, Frank Sinatra, and Montgomery Clift. After transferring to an army base in Oahu, Private Prewitt (Clift) finds himself persecuted for refusing to join the regiment boxing team. Under orders from Captain Holmes, Prewitt is brutally punished by Sergeant Warden (Lancaster) and the men in his company. Meanwhile, Warden begins an affair with Holmes’s wife Karen (Kerr), and Prewitt’s friend, Maggio (Sinatra), runs foul of stockade sergeant ‘Fatso’ Judson (Ernest Borgnine), escalating to deadly consequences. Meanwhile, the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor looms in the distance. “From Here to Eternity remains, half a century later, a singular cinematic experience, one of the landmarks of American film” (Kenneth Turan).
