The 1773 Boston Tea Party is an iconic event in American history, a symbol for civic-minded citizens and activist organizations across the political spectrum. Since 2009, the far-right has laid claim to the Tea Party, creating a national campaign against taxation and tyranny in its modern forms. But what resemblance, if any, does this recent movement have to the original protests of 1773? Harvard historian and New Yorker writer Jill Lepore, author of The Whites of Their Eyes, traces the far right’s reactionary embrace of the Tea Party story and explores their yearning for an imagined past. Book sales and signing to follow.
