What I Do & Where I Do It

What I Do & Where I Do It

    Thursday, Sept 2nd - Sunday, Sept 26th

The Loading Dock Gallery at Western Avenue Studios

    122 Western Avenue, Lowell, MA

Opening Reception: Friday September 10th from 6-9PM

What I Do & Where I Do It is an artists’ sampler show perfect for helping you decide which Western Avenue studios to visit during Lowell Open Studios. Each Loading Dock Gallery artist’s artwork will be accompanied by a photograph providing a glimpse of the studio where the art was created.

View a colorful, landscape image filled kimono jointly created by mother-daughter duo, Ann Lee and Sonja Lee-Austin. The kimono was inspired the song “Long Way” by Boston-based singer/songwriter, Antje Duvekot. The kimono incorporates many photos printed on fabric to capture the feeling of the cross-country road trip described in the song. The photos are from Sonja’s own travels from Nahant, Massachusetts to Glacier Bay, Alaska.

As you study the kimono you can also visually “enter” Ann and Sonja’s studio which is filled to the brim with art supplies, fabric, and artwork. While their studio might leave some artists reeling for room to breathe, for Ann and Sonja it holds all the tools necessary to create artwork like their kimono and gives them the stimulation and excitement that a candy store gives to little kids. There is a computer and printer for printing images on fabric, a sewing machine each, a design wall for pinning up artwork in progress, and a wide array of fabrics, fibers, paints, and other art supplies. There are fiber art collages and art quilts hanging on the walls, Ann’s one-of-a-kind jackets on dress forms, and Sonja’s silken art banners hanging from the ceiling.

For a bit of contrast, head over to the artwork and studio of photographer, Meghan Moore. Her photographs have a pure elegance even when the subjects are humorous and lighthearted. Her studio is minimalist and expansive. There are white walls, a comfy sofa for guests, a large photo shooting backdrop, and some of Meghan’s photographs hanging on the walls. The studio comes alive when people come in for a photo shoot. Meghan has a real flare for capturing people and making the process painless as she often offers “Painless Portraits” sessions during open studios.

What I Do & Where I Do It features many more artists from sculptors to painters, to jewelers to mixed media. A visit to us at the Loading Dock Gallery to see what we do and where we do it is the perfect prelude to the Lowell Open Studios weekend September 25-26.

What I Do & Where I Do It will be showing in The Loading Dock Gallery at Western Avenue Studios, 122 Western Avenue, 2nd floor of the A-Mill from Thursday, September 2nd to Sunday, September 26th. There will be a reception for the artists Friday, September 10th from 6 - 9 pm. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 11am to 4:30pm.
