    Estancia: Four Dances, Op. 8a

Rhythmic roots of folk music fuel the fiery beat of Latin music. In Adiós Nonino, Piazzolla creates the essential tango sound while Villa-Lobos connects the sound-world of Bach and Brazil folk music in his Bachianas Brasileiras. Argentine composer Bacalov captures the magical mood of the film “Il Postino” (The Postman) while Ginastera draws upon the “gauchesco” literacy and dance traditions to portray a “day-in-the-life” of an Argentine ranch. Venezuelan-born pianist Gabriela Montero’s interpretation of Schumann’s inventive Piano Concerto makes for an exceptional performance.

    Gabriela Montero, Piano
The prodigiously gifted pianist Gabriela Montero's visionary interpretations and unique improvisational gifts have won her a quickly expanding audience and devoted following around the world. Montero, who hails from Caracas, gave her first public performance at the age of five. Today, her engagements include acclaimed performances with the New York Philharmonic, Rotterdam Philharmonic and Wigmore Hall in London.

Montero’s playing has everything: crackling rhythmic brio, subtle shadings, steely power…soulful lyricism…unsentimental expressivity.”
