For Opening Night of the 2010-2011 BSO season, James Levine leads an all-Wagner program featuring world-renowned Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel in music from two of the great baritone roles in opera. In The Flying Dutchman, considered Wagner’s first mature work and his first great success, the Dutchman sings a monologue, “Die Frist ist um,” that tells of the curse that keeps him wandering the seas. Die Meistersinger, a late Wagner masterpiece, centers on Hans Sachs, a Nuremberg mastersinger whose wise presence instructs the young Walther in the art of song. Orchestral music from Wagner’s Ring operas complete this gala program.
