Masters of Tone Painting
May 8, 2011
The Splendid Newton Symphony Orchestra shines in a concert of Hindemith and Mahler. "Mathis der Maler" is Hindemith's most popular orchestral work. The music is extracted from his opera "Mathis der Maler(Matthias the Painter)", in which he uses bold orchestration and colorful tone painting to evoke the work of German Renaissance painter Grunewald, when he was painting "The Isenheim Altarpiece". Mahler's symphonic writing uses equally revolutionary ideas to communicate the monumental range of human emotion.
