All open house events are free and open to the public. Sunday's concert will take place at 7:30 PM in the Maliotis Cultural Center's Theatre. The program salutes the music of famous composers who were active flutists and highlights their compositions for the instrument. The first half of the concert will feature performances by Boston Flute Academy Young Artists Emma Huelskamp, Catherine Jones, Jiweon Ryu, and Zach Sheets performing with pianist Deborah DeWolf Emery. Selections include music of Franz Doppler, Paul Taffanel, Zach Sheets, and the Boston premiere of a work by Gary Schocker for flute and piano. The second half of the concert will feature Guest Artist Robert Dick, who will perform a set of his own compositions along with solo flute music by Sigfrid Karg-Elert. In addition to the recital, Mr. Dick will coach two open masterclasses from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM and 1:00 - 2:30 PM with flute students from the BFA Young Artist, Conservatory, and Repertory Programs. The event is generously sponsored in part by Brannen Brothers Flutemakers, Inc. with a grant from the Brannen-Cooper Fund. The Boston Flute Academy makes its home at the Maliotis Cultural Center on the Hellenic College/Holy Cross Campus, 50 Goddard Avenue, in Brookline, MA, 02445. The site is handicap accessible and free parking is provided. About Guest Artist Robert Dick With equally deep roots in classical music old and new and in free improvisation and new jazz, Robert Dick has established himself as an artist who has not only mastered his instrument, he has redefined the flute. Diverse global audiences have likened his uncanny solo performances to “the experience of hearing a full orchestra.” Dick’s sound can be thick chords one instant, then chromatic percussion, then delicate whispering filigrees, then a display of surprising power. His performances include flute (with his invention, the Glissando Headjoint®), piccolo, alto flute, and bass flutes in C and F and the giant, stand-up contrabass flute. Dick has had a major impact on flute playing everywhere because of his pedagogy, including countless masterclasses throughout the Americas, Europe, Australia and Asia, the seminal books The Other Flute, Tone Development through Extended Techniques and Circular Breathing for the Flutist plus two volumes of the etudes Flying Lessons. Instructional CDs and DVDs --and his series of instructional videos on YouTube -- illuminate his ideas and music for students and professionals everywhere.
