PETE: The Unadult(E)rated Peter and the Wolf
April 23, 2011
The innovative companies Giants Are Small and Big Heart Theatrical catapult the classic tale into a fantastical modern day Los Angeles and give it a environmentalist twist: the wolf, driven from his natural wooded habitat by fire, descends on the city to prey upon its citizens. The piece, which was performed last year in a symphonic version by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, features music drawn from the original Prokofiev score as well as Gershwin, Shostakovich, Grieg, Elgar, and Schumann. The developmental residency will focus on transforming the philharmonic version into a multi-dimensional theatrical event combining puppetry and “living animation,” which involves a toy theater on stage. These elements will be filmed live and projected on large-screens, where they’re mixed with prepared animation.
