Founded in September of 2008, The Worcester Childrens Chorus offers area children an opportunity to sing choral music ranging from Classical to Gospel.Children come from all around Worcester County and surrounding Central, Western and Eastern MA towns. Membership offers professional-level instruction in vocal technique, music theory, sight singing, ear training, and presentation as well as exposure to a variety of choral styles. Currently, there are 4 choruses within the WCC program and include singers from ages 8-18. An exciting new development this season was the addition of a tour chorus which will provide additional performance opportunities and challenging repertoires for the most advanced members and an additional treble chorus for intermediate level singers.
Singers are selected by audition and pay a modest tuition to participate. Scholarships have also been offered to families on a financial needs basis. The chorus resides on the campus of Assumption College. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Auburn cultural council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural council, a state agency. It was formed under the auspices of the Master Singers of Worcester. Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings from 6:30- 8:00 P.M and are directed by Malcolm Halliday, Jennifer Kane, and Philip Montgomery.
In prior seasons, the chorus has performed in seasonal concerts as well as at the Boars Head Festival, Worcester Art Museum, H'Arts and Hope for Haiti at the Hanover Theatre, and at many other venues during its two year history.
The mission of the Worcester Childrens Chorus is to enrich the lives of children throughout Worcester County by providing a quality musical experience through training in choral singing. Involvement also enhances young people's lives, helping them to develop qualities of self-reliance, personal integrity, responsibility, compassion, and confidence in their abilities.
