Christmas in a Great English Church
December 10, 2010
As winter falls and the holiday season is upon us, our popular Christmas series will transport you (in spirit!) from the hubub of today's world to the sublime surroundings of a Great English Church, as The Boston Cecilia recreates a lovely tradition borrowed from English chapels. Lessons and Carols tells the story of the season in a word and music. Carols and anthems from European traditions--ancient and modern.
Works by Byrd, Palestrina, Loquebantur, Ord, Vaughan Williams, Walton, Howells, a set of haunting Carols by the contemporary John Tavener, and a strring setting of Mary's great hymn, Magnificat, by Gerald Finzi.
