Writer-director Kim Ki-young’s landmark of Korean cinema is an emotionally dizzying melodrama, balancing themes of temptation and morality through unpredictable shifts of tone and temper. Beginning with straightforward illustrations of the social mores and class distinctions that define a middle-class family, The Housemaidsoon undermines its own realist qualities, offering a femme fatale-esque character who disobeys established order and inevitably guides the narrative with acts of adultery and violence. Lee Eunshim gives a dynamic performance as the titular housemaid, whose seductive and seemingly innocent charm swiftly unravels to reveal a deviant, predatory psyche.

Martin Scorsese calls The Housemaid “passionately claustrophobic” and considers the West’s initial disregard for Kim Ki-young’s masterpiece “one of the great accidents of film history.” The World Cinema Foundation has achieved miraculous results in this painstakingly restored print.

“From the point of view of a Westerner, the discovery of a film like The Housemaid more than 40 years after it was made, is a marvelous feeling—marvelous not just because one finds in writer-director Kim Ki-young a truly extraordinary image-maker, but because his film is such an utterly unpredictable work. So Luis Buñuel had a Korean brother!” —Jean-Michel Frodon, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die
