    Opening: Photographs by Tobia Makover

The Atelier Gallery at the Stoneham Theatre

    Through the Boneyard

    Photographs By Tobia Makover

    November 15 - January 9, 2011

    Opening reception Dec 9, 2010 6PM - 7:30

In life and in work, photographer Tobia Makover contemplates the physicality of our existence. She questions the importance of our being and the impact of our time here, while she examines the tension between holding on and the desire to let go.

A series of her photographs, Through the Boneyard, is featured in The Atelier Gallery at the Stoneham Theatre in Stoneham, MA, November 15 through January 9. An opening reception is December 9, 6-7:30 p.m. The exhibit runs parallel to the theater's production of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.

The Boneyard is a deserted beach on Ossabaw Island, off the coast of Georgia where, Makover says, "the trees are slowly eroding into the sea." She visited the beach after her father lost his long battle with cancer, after the birth of her son, and -- unbeknownst to her - shortly after her second son's conception.

"Through the Boneyard is a visual diary from a time when death and birth collided head-on," she says.

Makover shoots with film in a medium format camera at a one-second exposure. She mounts her images on custom-made boards and encases the work in wax and resin.

Makover is an award-winning fine art photographer who has exhibited around the world, notably at the National Portrait Gallery in London; Les Ateliers de L'Image in St. Remy, France; and AIPAD in New York. She lives in Savannah, GA, with her husband and two sons.

The Griffin Museum's Atelier Gallery at the Stoneham Theatre is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 1-6 p.m., and one hour before each theater performance. The gallery can be accessed through the Stoneham Theatre's lobby at 395 Main Street in Stoneham, MA.

The Stoneham Theatre is a professional nonprofit regional theater that presents eight shows a year. For more information, visit www.stonehamtheatre.org (Map).
