ABOUT THE WORKSHOP - D.R. Finch Music will present a one-hour interactive jazz performance workshop for the youth on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at 12:30p in the Honan-Allston Public Library. Admission is free and open to the general public. The afternoon will be part performance, part conversation as the audience is invited to participate and learn about the process of creating music. The workshop will feature the Kevin Harris Project. The Boston based trio will discuss the meaning of improvisation and its importance within the context of improvised music and jazz. Original compositions and jazz standards will help familiarize participants with various types of musical styles and forms of playing. The history and evolution of jazz music in America and instrumentation within the jazz trio platform will also be discussed. Light refreshments will be served. ABOUT KEVIN HARRIS - Jazz pianist Kevin Harris plays a distinctive combination of traditional and contemporary music. The native Kentuckian's compositions and arrangements vary from explosive polyrhythmic pieces to introspective ballads. Harris has performed at the Blue Note (NYC and Milan), Scullers Jazz Club, Regatta Bar, Wang Theatre, Jordan Hall, Berklee Performance Center, Wally's Jazz Café, and has participated in the Boston Jazz festival of the past few years. Harris completed his undergraduate degree in music education from Morehead State University, KY. He then went on to receive a master’s degree in Jazz Performance from the New England Conservatory. Committed to music education and to getting youth involved in music performance, Kevin has conducted workshops and residencies throughout the USA, and around the world.
