Now that Gerry Mulligan, Harry Carney and Pepper Adams have left the planet, the mantle of most-heralded baritone saxophonist alive is now in the deft hands of Gary Smulyan. A seven-time Grammy award winner who has been named Best Baritone Saxophonist by numerous, prestigious jazz magazines and organizations, Gary can be found criss-crossing the world with Dave Holland, the Dizzy Gillespie All-star Big Band, the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and the small ensembles of John Faddis and Joe Lovano. When asked who he will be performing with at the jazz center, Smulyan was quick to respond: he called for his favorite configuration, a piano-less trio of baritone, bass and drums which, he says, gives the greatest freedom to improvise and explore. In this concert, Gary will be joined by world-renowned NY- based brothers Ray Drummond on bass & Billy Drummond on drums. Come find out why “Mr. LowBlow” has earned such high praise. This concert is sponsored by William R. Schutt of MATCOR, Inc.
