Alive by Her Own Hand: Women Composers As Performers of Their Work, a “fest-conference” presented by the Brandeis University Women’s Studies Research Center on January 22-23, will create the widest possible window into female musicians composing and delivering their own creations to the public. Two bold concert programs, one entitled Alive by Her Own Hand: Living Artists & Current Movements on January 22, and the other, called Ave Regina: Women’s Musical Creations in Convent and Accademia, on January 23, make up the evocative bookends for this weekend of events, which also includes lecture/recitals, papers, and informal discussion on the afternoons of both days. The concerts will take place in Slosberg Music Center while the other activities will be held at the Women’s Studies Research Center in the Epstein Building, both on the Brandeis campus. The weekend of events is being organized by WSRC Visiting Scholar Vivian Montgomery and WSRC Resident Scholar Liane Curtis as part of the Center’s Women and Music Project.
