Stanley Kubrick’s powerful drama about the dehumanization process used to prepare half-formed young men for combat during the Vietnam War and what happens when that training is put to the test is a film “of immense and very rare imagination” (New York Times). Part of the Coolidge's ongoing Science on Screen series, the film will be accompanied by a talk by Jonathan Shay, PhD, MD, a nationally known expert on combat trauma. For 20 years, Dr. Shay was a staff psychiatrist at the Department of Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic, Boston, where he treated Vietnam combat veterans with severe psychological injuries. He retired from clinical work in 2008 to devote himself full time to preventive psychiatry in military organizations.
