Sara Schechner, David P. Wheatland Curator of the Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments; and Susan Dackerman, Carl A. Weyerhaeuser Curator of Prints, Division of European and American Art, Harvard Art Museums

Harvard has been acquiring scientific instruments for teaching and research since 1672. Since its inception in 1948, the Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments has become one of the three largest university collections of its kind in the world, containing over 20,000 objects dating from about 1400 to the present and representing a broad range of disciplines. Curators Schechner and Dackerman have collaborated on the exhibition Prints and the Pursuit of Knowledge in Early Modern Europe, opening at the Sackler Museum in fall 2011, to demonstrate connections between makers of prints and instruments as well as the objects they produce.

Participation is free, but registration is required. Harvard Treasures, a series offered only to members, explores the university’s architectural riches and art holdings beyond the museums. To learn more about membership and to register for the tour, call 617-495-4544 or email am_membership@harvard.edu.
