On February 3rd at 7:30pm vocalist Melissa Kassel and pianist Tom Zicarelli return to the Lily Pad to kick off a new series of shows on the first Thursday of every month. The band features bassist Bruno Raberg, trumpeter Phil Grenadier, and the newest member of the family, percussionist Austin McMahon. The group is thrilled to have Austin back and is looking forward to another magical year. This is an exciting improvisational experience that you won’t want to miss. A sure cure for midwinter cabin fever. Kevin Blumenthal of the Boston Globe recently wrote (August 2010), “The Boston-based vocalist [Melissa Kassel] rarely, if ever, takes the standard approach to standards. Where the typical singer shouts, she might whisper; a passage usually taken quickly, she may stretch out like taffy. Yet it’s all in service to the improvisational moment being shared with her top-notch band.” Harvey Pekar of WBUR radio in Boston said, “She’s among the best jazz vocalists to emerge in years.”
