Perhaps the most anthologized of Hemingway’s short stories is adapted for the screen in Siodmak’s exemplary film noir. Themes of betrayal and deception course throughout this post-war masterpiece, which launched the careers of then-relatively unknown Burt Lancaster and Ava Gardner and is rumored to be Hemingway’s favorite film adaptation of his own work.
