Five Boston Songwriters Come Together To Venerate the New England Cold In “Winter: A Night Of Voice, Piano and Strings”

On Sunday, February 6, 2011. Five singer-songwriter-pianists, joined with a litter of string players, will perform songs and tell stories celebrating winter at the Lily Pad, 1353 Cambridge St. Inman Square. Cambridge MA. 6:30pm. All ages. $10 at door or $9 in advance at www.brownpapertickets.com

CAMBRIDGE, MA. January 25, 2011. On Sunday, February 6, 2011, Christopher Barnes (Gem Club), Mary Bichner (Box Five), Brian King (What Time Is It, Mr. Fox?), Sarah Rabdau (as Foolish Ida), and Mali Sastri (Jaggery) will sing songs and tell stories celebrating the post-holidays’ dark icy months. The songwriting vocalists/pianists will be joined by some of the Boston rock scene’s best string players including viola player Rachel Jayson (Army of Broken Toys, Amanda Palmer), cellist Valerie Thompson (Goli), violinist Nathan Cohen (What Time Is It, Mr. Fox?) and upright bassist Mike Leggio (What Time Is It, Mr. Fox?, Army of Broken Toys.)

The performers will deliver original and classic songs, from the soulful to the whimsical, lauding the romance and drama of the frozen nights of winter. The night will include Mali Sastri and Brian King performing a searing duet of the Annie Lennox classic “Cold,” as well as full ensemble re-stylings of Kate Bush’s haunting “Under Ice” and Tori Amos’ seminal “Winter.” Performers will also share personal reflections and memories about soldiering through a New England Winter, with at least one retelling of a classic winter fairytale.

In addition to her well-known musical superpowers of perfect pitch and synesthesia (a neurological gift that causes her to “see” splashes of specific colors when she hears corresponding pitches), BOX FIVE frontwoman Mary Bichner can deliver a lyrical punch with her introspective words and classipop arrangements. www.boxfive.org

“Much has already been written about [Mali] Sastri’s uncanny vocal range, but her theatricality [is] equally impressive. Her disposition switche[s] from new-age songbird to woman scorned to woodland fairy to blood-thirsty werewolf to sultry lounge singer according to the mood of the music.” ~ Boston Phoenix www.jaggery.net

'Foolish Ida' is the new solo project from singer/pianist Sarah Rabdau of Sarah RabDAU & Self-Employed Assassins. The name is taken from the main character in Maurice Sendak's book Outside Over There, an imaginative tale about a girl whose little sister is stolen by goblins while she's distracted playing music. The songs are written imagining Ida as an adult, and how she could have been shaped from the experiences of her youth.

Brian King, soul divo front man for the eclectic cabaret band, What Time Is It, Mr. Fox? has been called the male Annie Lennox by numerous admirers. He is known for his powerful voice and lyrical imagery. His song “Cold Rain” was recorded by soul legend, Irma Thomas, on her Grammy-nominated CD “Simply Grand.” And recently the TimeOut NYC critic’s pick section urged, “catch him as his star rises.” High resolution image available at http://www.whattimeisitmrfox.com/BrianKingbyKateWheeler.jpg

Christopher Barnes, singer-songwriter-pianist for the minimalist duo, Gem Club, “buries vague but revealing lyrics in delicate, sometimes somber, sometimes lighthearted melodies. There is a balance between pain and hope, a sense of growth and catharsis spawned from harder days, all complemented by the breathy vocals and symphonic instrumentation.” –Crawdaddy www.iamgemclub.com
