Veteran American conductor John Nelson, making his BSO subscription series debut (having last conducted the orchestra at Tanglewood in 1995), is joined by the brilliant Russian pianist Evgeny Kissin in two Romantic piano concertos. Chopin wrote his Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor (actually composed slightly later than No. 2 in F minor) at age twenty, before he moved to France from Poland, but the piece already exhibits the uniqueness of his style. Grieg's concerto-one of the most popular of all time-is also an early work, exhibiting both a Romantic bent and a hint of the folk-music influence that would inform Grieg's later music. Two orchestral works by Franz Liszt-2011 being his bicentennial year-complete the program.
