Audience favorite Sir Colin Davis returns to the BSO podium for two weeks of concerts this season. The first, an all-Classical program, features the BSO’s own principal clarinet William Hudgins in Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, one of the composer’s last completed works. Mozart’s rarely heard Symphony No. 32, which the BSO hasn’t played in Symphony Hall since 1974, is a one-movement, eight-minute work more in the character of an overture than a symphony. Haydn’s No. 97, however, is a full-fledged symphony demonstrating the wealth of the composer’s wit and craft.
