Sir Colin Davis returns for the second of his two subscription weeks to conduct music of a composer for whom he has a renowned affinity—Jean Sibelius. That composer’s late tone poem Tapiola, his last completed major work, was written in 1926 and evokes the stark mystery of the Finnish forest and its deity. The Symphony No. 3, is a three-movement work with a folk-like, pastoral touch. To close the program, American pianist Jonathan Biss is soloist in Beethoven’s epic Piano Concerto No. 5, Emperor, the last and greatest of his concertos.
