April 2-April 3, 2011
Add Review/Comment
One of the films referenced in Mamadrama, A Letter to Mother was the highest grossing Yiddish film of its era, hailed by the New York Times as one of the best Yiddish films to reach America. A mother struggles to care for her three children in pre-WWI Polish Ukraine, as severe poverty and the turmoil of war slowly pull her family apart in a melodrama critic J Hoberman calls “arguably the most artful and shameless of Yiddish weepies.” Co-presented with the National Center for Jewish Film; screened on NCJF’s gorgeous 35mm restoration print.
