In acclaimed French filmmaker Bruno Dumont’s latest film, a young woman’s religious passion is so severe she is deemed overzealous and turned away from a convent, exiled to the secular world of contemporary Paris. There Céline (Sokolowski) lives in her parent’s palatial apartment, studies theology at University and is befriended by an Arab boy and his older brother, who runs an Islam study group and leads Céline toward a radical decision. In keeping with Dumont’s reputation for asking provocative questions while offering no easy answers, Hadewijch doesn’t shirk from extreme consequences; Dumont’s uncompromising treatment of the gravity of Céline’s consuming faith is a haunting depiction of the search for divine transcendence in the modern world.
