In anticipation of the release of Kelly Reichardt’s new film, Meek’s Cutoff, ArtsEmerson looks at the director’s early work, from her super-8 featurette Ode, to her debut 16mm feature River of Grass, to Old Joy, the film which first gained Reichardt widespread notice and praise for bringing a new kind of social realism to American screens. Described by the New York Times as “a triumph of modesty and of seriousness that also happens to be one of the finest American films of the year,” Old Joy explores a changing friendship and diverging lives as two old friends take a road trip from Portland through the wilderness of Oregon’s Cascade Mountains. Reichardt conceived the female anti-hero of River of Grass wondering “how the lone-rebel, a fixture in every road movie, could exist in the ‘90s when even the Burger King slogan tells you to ‘Break the Rules’.” Both River of Grass and Ode—a 1960s teenage love story adapted from the Herman Raucher novel Ode to Billy Joe and featuring an original soundtrack by Will Oldham—are set in the American South, across the country from Reichardt’s more recent investigations of the Pacific Northwest but sharing the same keen sense of American regions and landscapes underrepresented in the typical urban worlds of Hollywood’s America.
