Allen's career at Yankee spans three decades of writing and editing. In pursuit of stories he has raced a sled dog team, crawled into the dens of black bears, fished with the legendary Ted Williams, and picked potatoes in Aroostook County . His column, "Here in New England ," was 2009 National City and Regional Magazine Awards finalist. He teaches writing at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

Mel's talk explores the nature of New England through the words and stories of people he has met through Yankee over the years. From droll farmers to lighthouse keepers, from the famous to the unknown, the people who have graced Yankee's pages offer us with a unique perspective on the region.
