Robert Thorson is a professor of geology at the University of Connecticut and founder of the New England Stone Wall Initiative, whose mission is to promote appreciation and conservation of historic stone walls. Professor Thorson will present a slide lecture on the geology, history, and continuing function of stone walls.
Abandoned stone walls found in woods all over New England tell a fascinating story. Most were built by early American farm families using stones that heaved up from the subsoil. Long before, the stones had been quarried from bedrock and scattered over the landscape by glaciers moving across the rocky surface of northeastern North America . This ancient rock was created much earlier, during the formation of the Appalachians , and was made of minerals made from elements made from universal matter captured by our solar system during formation of planet Earth. Hence, the story of stone walls begins with the beginning of everything and extends to the present moment.
