    ENCOUNTERING SLAVERY AND RACE IN NEW ENGLAND Slavery in America's Birthplace: Rethinking the History of Concord, Massachusetts Known as the birthplace of American liberty, Concord, Massachusetts, was also a slave town from its founding until after the Revolution. Elise Lemire, author of Black Walden: Slavery and Its Aftermath in Concord, Massachusetts (2009), will share how and why slaves were used by local elites, what living conditions Concord's slaves endured, and how they helped effect their own emancipation. Professor Lemire will also discuss the lives of the enslaved men, women, and children of Concord after they achieved their freedom. At Myrtle Baptist Church, 21 Curve Street, West Newton. Free.
