Adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s first novel and co-scripted by Raymond Chandler, Strangers on a Train is driven by “a plot made of ingenuity and amorality” (Roger Ebert). When the psychopathic Bruno (Walker), who wants his father dead, meets tennis celebrity Guy (Granger), whose unfaithful wife won’t give him a divorce, Bruno proposes a criss-cross murder. It would be a perfect crime, for which neither man would be suspected, but the plan derails when Bruno proceeds without Guy’s agreement. And thus Guy is embroiled in the Hitchcockian nightmare: accused of a crime he didn’t commit and in a race against time to prove his innocence. Along the way the master of suspense designs thrilling, unforgettable sequences. From the tennis match Guy rushes to complete, to the incriminating lighter, fallen through a storm drain, to the struggle on a merry-go-round spinning out of control—these are among the unforgettable cinematic images described by Jean-Luc Godard as having branded themselves into our collective filmic unconscious.
