During the month of May, the Boston Center for Adult Education (BCAE) will present “One Fine Sunday in the Funny Pages,” a free, one-of-a-kind exhibition featuring the original artwork of 140 different syndicated comic strips and panels. The free exhibition will be open to the public from Monday, May 2nd through Friday, May 27th, 2011. In celebration of the exhibition, and just in time for National Cartoonists Day on Thursday, May 5th, 2011, the BCAE is offering students the chance to learn the art of drawing and creating comic strips with three new workshops: Creating a Comic Strip, Cartoon Drawing Workshop: Make Them Laugh With Your Pen, and Comic Book Art Workshop.

    Creating a Comic Strip
Learn the basics of writing and drawing comics! In this class you will discuss the history of the comic art form, cover the tools needed to make your strip, and learn the fundamentals of composition and visual storytelling. By the end of the four sessions, you will be able to create your own hilarious or action-packed characters and settings. The possibilities are endless! Begins Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM; 4 sessions. $100/$88 Members.

Cartoon Drawing Workshop: Make Them Laugh With Your Pen
If you love to draw but serious art isn’t quite your cup of tea, then this class is for you! Learn how to sketch goofy and laughably absurd cartoons in this one session workshop. You will cover the basics of cartoon expression while looking at the work of great comic artists for inspiration. Saturday, May 14th, 2011 from 10:00AM to 2:00PM; 1 session. $60/$52 Members.

    Comic Book Art Workshop
Spark your imagination with creative exercises and thought-provoking one-page assignments in this four-session class. You will conceptualize your own comic story, create original characters, and learn how to develop a pace through layout and composition. Just bring a pencil, an eraser, a sketchpad and your thinking cap! Begins Thursday, May 5th, 2011 from 7:45PM to 9:45PM; 4 sessions. $125/$107 Members.

Class registration is necessary. Please visit www.bcae.org or call the Boston Center for Adult Education at 617-267-4430 to sign up.
