In a journey through her own and others' sagas of diabetes, Robbie McCauley cracks open silences about the shame, pain and triumphs of people who suffer from 'a little bit of sugar.' Robbie has shaped survival tales from her own life and interviews with other diabetics, their families, friends and health care providers both locally and nationally. This is about much more than a medical condition. Sugar is a metaphor and reality related to race, class, gender and health, bringing together storytelling, social commentary, and interactive dialogue on the subject of diabetes and health care disparities.

Sugar is the centerpiece of an event sponsored by Emerson College and Artists In Context, which has developed ongoing story circles among diabetics in selected Boston communities, as well as guest lectures and liaisons with civic and health organizations.
