Professor Shneer explains why so many Jews were involved in Soviet photography and why they were the ones charged with documenting the Soviet experiment and its near-destruction at the hands of the Nazis. David Shneer is associate professor of history and director of the Program in Jewish Studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and the author of Yiddish and the Creation of Soviet Jewish Culture, co-author of New Jews: The End of the Jewish Diaspora, and editor of Queer Jews. His most recent book is Through Soviet Jewish Eyes: Photography, War, and the Holocaust.
