Bollywood Workshop with Jess!
July 30 - August 3, 2011
Bollywood dance is an art form that originates from the Hindi-film industry in Mumbai (more popularly known around the world simply as ‘Bollywood’). It is not only used to entertain but is also used to express different cinematic themes and emotions, with a particular emphasis on romance and a joy of life! Different elements from traditional Indian dances such as Bhangra and Bharatanatyam are fused together with simple, fun movement that may also be inspired by other dance forms such as Bellydancing, Hip-Hop, Jazz and Ballroom.
We will spend the first half of the workshop warming up and familiarizing ourselves with basic Bollywood moves that are commonly seen in the movies. The second portion will be dedicated towards learning and refining the movement for a fun Bollywood routine set to ‘Jai Ho’ or ‘Aaja Nachle’.Everyone is welcome to participate and no experience is necessary. Bollywood dancing can be quite a workout, so please be prepared to sweat, smile and have tons of fun! Please wear comfortable clothes that you can move around in. Participants are also welcome to dress in Indian or belly-dancing attire (loose long-flowing skirts that stop at the ankle can be a good substitute for ladies that would like to dress up). Shoes or barefoot. **Pre-registration is required!
