Seven Turkish Artists: Mike Mandel and Chantal Zakari
Presented by Photographic Resource Center at Photographic Resource Center
September 13 - November 12, 2011
7 Turkish Artists explores how the iconography of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founding father of modern Turkey after World War I, permeates and defines Turkey to this day. The exhibition features the photography of Mike Mandel and Chantal Zakari, artists who spent twelve years in Turkey—a country 99% Muslim, yet committed to secularism—exploring the complexity of Atatürk’s imagery. From thousands of photographs, hundreds of interviews, and a vast collection of archival imagery, their visual book The State of Ata (2010) was born, upon which “7 Turkish Artists” is based.
