Boston Lyric Opera channels Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ ominous maritime ghost chamber opera, THE LIGHTHOUSE, with four performances overlooking the Boston Harbor at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum.
Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ opera is an unforgettable gripping and overwhelming portrait of growing madness and possession. Originally inspired by the true story of three lighthouse keepers who mysteriously disappeared from their post on Northern Scotland’s Orkney Islands in 1900.
“Upon landing on that island, they found that the door of the lighthouse was open, the table was set for a meal, one cup was broken and one chair was overturned, but no trace of the lighthouse keepers,” said Davies.
John Bellemer (Carmen 2002, 2009), Christopher Burchett, and Boston favorite David Cushing comprise this cast of three extraordinary singing actors. David Angus conducts renowned stage director Tim Albery’s new production.
