In 1906 Naomi Uman’s great-grandparents emigrated to the United States from rural Ukraine. A century later, Uman reversed her family’s migration and crafted this cycle of 16mm films, which draw on her experience as an immigrant who settled in a community without knowledge of its language, and—through openness and observation—came to understand the rhythms of a culture whose patterns of labor and leisure continue in much the same way as in her ancestor’s time.
