As the estranged wife of presidential hopeful Grant Matthews (Tracy), Hepburn is the upright, moral compass who helps the candidate recover his integrity from the machinations of the corrupt backers out to engineer a Republican presidency. Capra’s cutting political satire was on the brink of disaster when its original leading lady pulled out—the film was saved when Hepburn stepped in and went on to become one of the most successful movies of 1948.
