Elegy for a dying town, coming-of-age story and chronicle of two generations’ multiple couplings, Picture Show conjures windswept Anarene, Texas, 1951. The football team has wrapped another crummy season; its players are shooting pool or riding in Jeff Bridges’ girlfriend’s (Shepard) convertible, while her dissatisfied mom (Burstyn) flips the bird at her occasional lover, and the lonely coach’s wife (Leachman) waits for her weekly ride to the doctor. Numerous Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, Cinematography and a never-topped four for supporting parts. (Adapted from Film Forum notes)
