David Mazower grew up in London "vaguely aware that [his] great-grandfather Sholem Asch had been someone important a long time ago." Sholem Asch, a Polish-born American novelist and playwright, is one of the most controversial and widely-known writers in Yiddish literature. David Mazower is a senior staff journalist with BBC World Service in London. He has written and published widely on British Jewish history, Jewish art and Yiddish culture.
