Peter Thibeault—Considering Marginally Useful Objects
Barbara Ward—American Furniture Design: An Historical Perspective
Considering Marginally Useful Objects: “In the tension between usefulness (function) and aesthetics (form), the inevitable contrast of art versus design versus craft is convoluted. What are we to consider as a proper critical approach to the design and production of so-called "Studio Furniture"? How do we approach an object that looks like "design" but has aspects of "art" about it? The current aesthetic environment labels just about anything as "art"; how do we judge objects that do not clearly exist in any one realm? “ Peter Thibeault
