Making History: Antiquaries in Britain
October 17 - December 11, 2011
"Making History" explores ways in which scholars have interpreted British history over the past three hundred years. Through objects collected by the Society of Antiquaries of London, the oldest independent society concerned with the study of the past, the exhibition traces milestones in the discovery, recording, preservation, interpretation, and communication of British history. It explores commonly held beliefs when the Society was founded in 1707 and reveals how new discoveries, technologies and interpretations have transformed understanding ever since.
The exhibition has been organized by the Society of Antiquaries of London in association with the McMullen Museum of Art, Boston College, and the Yale Center for British Art. It has been underwritten by Boston College and the Patrons of the McMullen Museum.
